EA seeks to fix The Sims 4 gay filter

Electronic Arts says it is fixing a system in The Sims 4 that forbids characters with gay names or descriptions being uploaded to a public gallery.

A YouTube video from German Sims player Anna aka WhyStuffIsGreat shows how attempts to upload characters with names that include words like "gay," "lesbian," "homosexual," or "queer," are rejected by The Sims 4's public gallery. The game states that the descriptions or names contain words that are forbidden.

A report on Kotaku verified the block on these words, while names and descriptions that suggest heterosexuality are given the all-clear.

EA, which has championed inclusion of homosexual characters in many of its games, said that it is looking into the issue and will fix it. "The Sims has a long history of supporting stories that players want to tell, irrespective of gender preference," according to a spokesperson. "The Gallery uses an automated filtering program that filters out certain words, including some of the ones you mentioned below. We are aware of have been working on a fix, which will be out soon."
